Padres' Brett Wallace hits go-ahead three-run home run against Cubs
San Diego Padres third baseman/first baseman Brett Wallace slugged a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh inning of Wednesday's 7-4 defeat of the Chicago Cubs.
It was his only hit of the game and he made two throwing errors at third base, but that can be forgiven. With two on and two outs and the Padres trailing by a run in the top of the seventh, Wallace sent a Pedro Strop pitch over the left-center field wall to silence the crowd at Wrigley Field and give the visiting Friars a 6-4 edge. They eventually took Game 1 of the day-night doubleheader by a score of 7-4.
Wallace is hitting just .224, and the home run was only his second of the year, but he owns a .406 on base percentage, thanks in part to the 5th best walk percentage (18.8) among hitters with at least 60 plate appearances. Our models currently project him to hit .256/.336/.432 with 10 home runs and a .333 wOBA over the remaining course of the season.
