Boston Red Sox pitcher Carson Smith (elbow) could join the club next week for a series against the Chicago White Sox.
Smith is scheduled to toss a light bullpen session on Thursday before appearing in back-to-back rehab games Friday and Saturday at Triple-A Pawtucket. Assuming all goes well, he will probably be activated Monday. The dominant 26-year-old setup man can be a huge addition to the Boston bullpen.
Smith posted a 2.36 xFIP and 2.1 Wins Above Replacement in 2015, which ranked fifth- and fourth-best among relievers. We have him projected to record a 2.66 ERA and 26.5 strikeout percentage against 117 batters in 2016.
