Chicago Cubs infielder Ildemaro Vargas has been designated for assignment Sunday.
The Cubs are shaking things up, adding a third catcher to the active roster in P.J. Higgins. The corresponding move is Vargas being cut loose. If he clears waivers, he'll have the option of accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A or electing free agency.
In 26 plate appearances this season, Vargas has a .130 batting average with a .579 OPS, 1 home run, 4 runs and 4 RBI.
