Blake Snell to make MLB debut on Saturday for Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays will call up pitching prospect Blake Snell to make his major league debut on Saturday against the New York Yankees, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

What It Means:

One of the top pitching prospects in baseball, Snell has put up a 2.51 ERA and 21/7 K/BB ratio over 14 1/3 innings in his first 3 starts for Triple-A Durham this season. The start had been expected to go to Erasmo Ramirez before he was needed in relief on Thursday. You'd have to think Ramirez will be given another shot in the rotation, which means it could just be a spot start for Snell. However, he could give the Rays something to think about if he pitches well.

Snell has been a big strikeout pitcher throughout his career in the minors, never posting a strikeout percentage of lower than 22.6, including 33.3 percent in 44 1/3 innings in Triple-A last season. Since 2013, he's never posted a FIP higher than 3.19, including recording a 2.12 in those same 44 1/3 innings in 2015. Snell's impressive minor league resume has to get the Rays excited about his future.
