Andrew Bailey

Phillies add Andrew Bailey to their bullpen

The Philadelphia Phillies purchased the contract of reliever Andrew Bailey from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

What It Means:

Bailey nearly made the Phillies' bullpen out of spring training. He'll get his shot now after registering a 1.80 ERA and 10/2 K/BB ratio over 5 innings at the Triple-A level. The right-hander holds 89 career major league saves and could get a spin in the ninth-inning role in Philadelphia at some point. Jeanmar Gomez currently has that job.

Despite owning 89 career saves at the major league level, just 14 have come post-2011 and none since 2013. Bailey pitched just 8 2/3 innings last season for the New York Yankees and recorded a 5.69 xFIP. He has a 3.57 career xFIP in 226 2/3 innings pitched with a 25.5 strikeout percentage (last season league average was 20.4 percent).
