Roberto Osuna

Blue Jays will use Roberto Osuna as closer

Toronto Blue Jays reliever Roberto Osuna will be the team's closer to begin the 2016 season, manager John Gibbons announced Wednesday.

What It Means:

Most expected the more experienced Drew Storen would win out, but Gibbons said "familiarity" with Osuna ultimately tipped the scales. To be far, Osuna was great in the role when given the opportunity last season and has done fine this spring with a 3.00 ERA and five strikeouts over six innings. Pitching the ninth for Toronto, he has a chance to be a top-10 closer this year in fantasy leagues. Storen has made it known that his preference is to close, but he'll now have to get comfortable in a set-up capacity.

Osuna posted a 3.45 xFIP in 69 2/3 innings last season and recorded a 27.7 strikeout percentage (league average is 20.4 percent). Storen's 2015 xFIP was 3.24 in 55 innings, and he posted a 29.4 strikeout percentage. The Jays have two quality arms at the tail end of their bullpen.
