The San Diego Padres acquired pitcher Dan Straily from the Houston Astros for catcher Erik Kratz.
Straily has fallen off the radar over the past year or two, but he's not too far removed from being an interesting pitcher. The 27-year-old made four appearances (three starts) at the major league level last year and posted a 4.77 ERA with 22.9 percent strikeout rate over 22 starts in Triple-A. He's out of options and was in the mix for a bullpen job with the Astros this spring, but the Padres could give him another look as a starter at some point. It's an interesting landing spot, at the very least.
Straily has shown the ability to be an average major league starter. For his career, he owns a 4.62 xFIP, 19.4 percent strikeout rate and 9.4 percent walk rate. Our projections, which view Straily as a reliever, have him striking out 29 hitters over 42 2/3 innings while posting a 4.18 ERA.
