Mariners designate Jesus Montero for assignment
The Seattle Mariners designated first baseman Jesus Montero for assignment.
Montero will have to pass through waivers unclaimed before accepting a minor league assignment. Despite his struggles this spring (.237, no homers, four RBI), given his pedigree, there should be other clubs willing to take a chance on him.
Montero did post a monstrous .420 wOBA last season in 430 plate appearances in Triple-A in 2015, but he had an underwhelming .223/.250/.411 slash line (.284 wOBA) in 116 plate appearances with the big league club. He hit five home runs in that span, however.
