Brad Penny opts to retire from baseball
Pitcher Brad Penny has announced his retirement from baseball.
Penny caught on with the Toronto Blue Jays on a minor league deal over the winter, but he wasn't going to make the team and has decided to hang up his cleats. Slated to turn 38 in May, Penny has bounced back and forth from the majors and minors the last couple years and hasn't had any success in the big leagues since 2010.
Penny had a solid career, posting a 4.29 ERA (4.12 FIP) across 1,925 innings while making a pair of All-Star teams. He racked up 1,273 strikeouts and a 1.38 WHIP.
