Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz (back) is expected to pitch in a game this weekend, according to Orioles' manager Buck Showalter.
Matusz was slowed by back discomfort early on in camp but returned to mound action on Monday and looked healthy enough to get the green light from Showalter. The left-hander appears to be on target for Opening Day.
Matusz posted a 2.94 ERA in 49 innings of relief last season, but his xFIP was exactly a run higher (3.94). He had an impressive 27.2 strikeout percentage, well above the 20.4 percent league average. We project Matusz to post a 3.62 ERA in 52 innings pitched while recording a 24.9 strikeout percentage.
