Marlon Byrd

Marlon Byrd agrees to minor league deal with Cleveland

The Cleveland Indians signed outfielder Marlon Byrd to a minor league contract.

What It Means:

The deal is pending a physical. The Indians' outfield depth is lacking without Abraham Almonte (PED suspension) and Michael Brantley (shoulder rehab), and Byrd should be a nice fit at hitter-friendly Progressive Field. The 38-year-old bashed 23 homers last year for the Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants but only batted .247 with 145 strikeouts. He hits lefties well and could platoon with Lonnie Chisenhall in right field.

Byrd posted a .317 wOBA in 153 games played last season, and his 23 home runs helped lead to an impressive .206 Isolated Power. He's hit at least 23 dingers three seasons in a row and could provide some pop for fantasy lineups if he's able to find significant playing time.
