Michael Lorenzen diagnosed with mild UCL sprain for Reds
Cincinnati Reds pitcher Michael Lorenzen was diagnosed with a mild sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
Lorenzen was scratched from a start last Wednesday and was sent for an MRI after suffering a setback. The issue is being described as a little bit of tendinitis, but obviously any mention of the ulnar collateral ligament is a cause for concern. More should be known in the next few days, but it's now very unlikely he's ready for the start of the season.
Lorenzen struggled to a 4.82 xFIP in 113 1/3 innings in 2015, his rookie season. He had a poor 16.1 strikeout percentage and an equally poor 11.1 walk percentage (league average is 20.4 percent and 7.7 percent, respectively). We currently project Lorenzen to record a 4.69 ERA in 2016 with virtually the same strikeout and walk percentages as he had last season.
