Los Angeles Angels second baseman Johnny Giavotella is entering an open competition for the starting role, according to Angels' manager Mike Scioscia.
Giavotella is the incumbent and the favorite, but Rey Navarro, Gregorio Petit and Cliff Pennington will all get looks this summer in Cactus League play. Scioscia might do well to work a platoon at second base this year.
Giavotella showed promise at times last season, but he finished with a mediocre .272/.318/.375 batting line, mashing four home runs and 51 runs in 502 plate appearances. He accrued a horrendous -8.6 Ultimate Zone Rating per 150 games (16th among the 18 qualified second basemen in 2015), and the Angels could opt for a better glove in their lineup.
