The Boston Red Sox signed relief pitcher Carlos Marmol to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
This is purely a buy-low, shot-in-the-dark move by Boston. The Red Sox are purchasing a lottery ticket on a pitcher who has always possessed nasty stuff but is typically done in by a lack of control.
In 2013, his last season with at least 20 frames pitched at the MLB level, Marmol fanned 10.84 hitters per nine innings but he walked an absurd 7.35 hitters per nine innings. Marmol hasn't posted an xFIP under 4.00 since 2011.
