Carter Capps, A.J. Ramos will compete for Marlins' closer gig

Miami Marlins relief pitcher Carter Capps will compete for the closer role with incumbent A.J. Ramos, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro confirms.

What It Means:

Ramos is a strong incumbent coming off a 32-save season, but Capps has some of the best stuff in the majors and a very unique delivery that seems to regularly confuse batters. Frisaro says the Marlins "are comfortable having competition settle who should take the ball with the lead in the ninth inning."

Across 70 1/3 innings pitched last year, Ramos had a ridiculous 31.41 percent strikeout rate and 9.39 percent walk rate. He recorded a 2.30 ERA and 3.01 FIP. Capps played in 30 games for the Marlins this year, setting career bests with a 1.16 ERA and 1.11 FIP as well as an absurd 49.2 percent strikeout rate.
