Matt Carpenter hitting seventh for Cardinals in postseason opener
St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenter will start in Game 1 of the Wild Card Round on Wednesday against right-hander Chris Paddack and the San Diego Padres.
Carpenter will serve as the designated hitter over Tyler O'Neill and hit seventh after sitting out the Cardinals' regular-season finale. He hit below .200 this year for the first time since becoming a full-time major leaguer.
