Johnny Cueto gets Giants' call for opener
San Francisco Giants pitcher Johnny Cueto has been named the Opening Day starter for July 23 versus the San Francisco Giants.
It will be Cueto’s fifth career Opening Day start but first in a Giants uniform. The 34-year-old right-hander was tagged for 9 runs across 16 innings in four starts over the final month of last season after missing most of the year recovering from Tommy John surgery. He then gave up another 9 earned on 13 hits in 6 1/3 innings in the first spring training. However, Cueto has apparently fared better in Spring Training 2.0. He topped 60 pitches in three innings during an intrasquad game at Oracle Park on Tuesday.
numberFire's models project Cueto for a 4.30 ERA and 1.33 WHIP with 48 strikeouts and 20 walks over 58 2/3 innings this season.
