Brandon Workman named Red Sox's closer

Boston Red Sox right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman has been named the club's closer to start the season, per manager Ron Roenicke.

What It Means:

“I think (Workman), with what he did last year, certainly deserves that role again,” Roenicke said. “I don’t want to say it’s exactly going to be every game that there’s a save situation that he’s in there. It depends on his workload, and how he’s throwing. But to begin with, certainly. He has got the ninth inning right now until something else happens.” Workman set career-bests with a 1.88 ERA, 104 strikeouts, and 16 saves over 71 2/3 innings last season. He turns 32 in August.

numberFire's models expect Workman to notch 11 saves with a 3.46 ERA and 33 strikeouts over 23 1/3 innings this season.
