Braves' Nick Markakis opts out of MLB restart
Atlanta Braves outfielder Nick Markakis has opted out of playing this season, per Braves manager Brian Snitker.
Markakis' decision comes just two days after four individuals in the Braves organization tested positive for COVID-19, including first baseman Freddie Freeman. Markakis signed a one-year, $4 million deal back in November to return to the Braves for a sixth straight season. He may not have been an everyday outfielder again in 2020, but Markakis likely would have seen consistent playing time against right-handers. The addition of the DH spot also figured to guarantee Markakis regular at-bats. Adam Duvall should benefit from Markakis opting out and it potentially creates a spot in the lineup for Austin Riley and Johan Camargo, who were expected to compete for third base duties. Marcell Ozuna could wind up being the Braves' primary DH.
Per FanDuel Sportsbook, the Braves have the fourth-best odds (+1400) to win the 2020 World Series.
