J.D. Davis a candidate for Mets' DH opportunities
New York Mets infielder/outfielder J.D. Davis is a candidate to see some time at designated hitter this season, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.
Part of the 'new normal' in MLB following the coronavirus pandemic is the universal DH, meaning both the American and National Leagues will feature nine hitters in the lineup. While the AL is used to this, it's a brave new world for their NL counterparts. While Yoenis Cespedes is expected to spend the majority of his time at designated hitter in an effort to remain healthy, it seems as though Davis could slot in there from time to time. The third baseman-turned-outfielder struggled mightily defensively in left field last year. Though he was expected to be the main starter at the position entering the 2020 season - he may stay in that role even now - Davis could see a good amount of time at DH.
In 453 plate appearances last season, Davis had a .307 batting average with 22 home runs, 57 RBI and an .895 OPS.
