Bronson Arroyo agrees to deal with Nationals

The Washington Nationals signed pitcher Bronson Arroyo to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

What It Means:

MLB.com's Mark Sheldon says Arroyo will make $2 million if he cracks the Opening Day roster and can earn a total of $8 million if he makes 32 starts. Assuming they don't plan to shift Tanner Roark back to the bullpen, Washington's rotation appears to be full. However, Arroyo might be best off knocking the rust off in the minors or in long relief, anyway, after missing all of 2015 following Tommy John surgery. The soon-to-be 39-year-old held a 3.79 ERA over 32 starts for the Reds in 2013 in his last full season.

He owns a career 4.37 xFIP. Over a full season, he has posted a sub-4.00 xFIP just once in his career (2013). Eating innings and limiting walks is just about all Arroyo offers.
