A.J. Ramos, Carter Capps to battle for role of Marlins' closer

Miami Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill expects there to be "an open competition" for the closer job.

What It Means:

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Marlins were interested in Fernando Rodney before he signed with the San Diego Padres earlier this week. With Rodney out of the picture, the Marlins will turn to either A.J. Ramos or Carter Capps for the closer role. Ramos led the Marlins with 32 saves last year but Capps has electric stuff and a funky delivery that throws hitters off balance. Either one would be a great fit for the ninth inning.

Across 70 1/3 innings pitched last year, Ramos had a ridiculous 31.41 percent strikeout rate and 9.39 percent walk rate. He also benefited from Miami's spacious home park, giving up just a 2.2% home run rate, as well as a 2.30 ERA and 3.01 FIP. Capps played in 30 games for the Marlins this year, setting career bests with a 1.16 ERA and 1.11 FIP as well as an absurd 49.2 percent strikeout rate.
