Angels to sign Al Alburquerque to major-league deal

The Los Angeles Angels have agreed to terms with relief pitcher Al Alburquerque on a major league contract, pending a physical, MLB Network's Jon Heyman reports.

What It Means:

The terms of the deal aren't known. The Detroit Tigers non-tendered Alburquerque last month, as they didn't feel he was worth a raise in his second year of arbitration eligibility. Alburquerque should still miss plenty of bats in Anaheim, but his poor control and lack of consistency make him a risky investment.

The 29-year-old Alburquerque has a career 11.04 strikeout-per-nine rate, although it fell to a career-low 8.42 last season. His walk-per-nine rate skyrocketed 4.79, and his ERA rose to an unsightly 4.21 with a 3.75 FIP.
