Padres to sign Carlos Villanueva
The San Diego Padres and reliever Carlos Villanueva have agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million contract, according to Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan.
Villanueva, 32 years-old, pitched 61 innings last season out of the St. Louis Cardinals' bullpen. He'll likely slot into a long relief role for the Padres for the 2016 season.
Villanueva posted a 2.95 ERA this past season, but his 4.06 xFIP -- which is also his career average -- was significantly higher. His 22.0 strikeout percentage was better than the league average of 20.4 percent, and his 80.5 Left on Base Percentage was a career high. The Padres had the 11th-best xFIP among relievers last season.
