Antonio Bastardo

Orioles, Mets reportedly talking with Antonio Bastardo

Free agent reliever Antonio Bastardo is in talks with the Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.

What It Means:

There could be other teams interested as well, as Olney notes the Orioles and Mets are "among those teams involved in talks." Bastardo is reportedly searching for a deal similar to what fellow reliever Tony Sipp received from the Houston Astros this offseason -- three-years, $18 million.

Bastardo pitched 57 1/3 innings for the Pittsburgh Pirates this season, posting a solid 2.98 ERA, although his significantly higher xFIP of 4.27 is concerning. Bastardo has struggled with command for his entire career, and 2015 was no different. His walk percentage was 10.9, significantly higher than the league average of 7.7 percent. He does strike out batters at a high rate, though, as his strikeout percentage was 26.8, well above league average of 20.2 percent. Despite being a lefty, right-handed hitters do not fare significantly better against Bastardo. His career xFIP is just 0.5 points higher when facing righties.
