Cubs officially promote Craig Kimbrel

The Chicago Cubs called up starting pitcher Craig Kimbrel from Triple-A Iowa.

What It Means:

Kimbrel's Cubs debut will be his first time throwing off a major league mound since the 2018 World Series for the Boston Red Sox. The 31-year-old closer didn't sign with the club until June 7, so he will likely be eased into the ninth-inning job. Tony Barnette was optioned to Iowa in a corresponding roster move.

Kimbrel converted 42 saves over 62 1/3 innings (62 games) last season for Boston. He recorded a 2.74 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with 96 strikeouts and 31 walks.
