Braves sign Alexi Ogando to minor league deal

Free agent pitcher Alexi Ogando signed with the Atlanta Braves to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

What It Means:

The deal has a base salary of $2 million if Ogando makes the squad and contains another $1 million in incentives, according to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish. Ogando, 32, was a reliever for the Boston Red Sox this season and should be in a good position to make the Opening Day roster for the Braves.

Ogando pitched 65 1/3 innings this season, posting a 4.54 xFIP, which was 11th worst among relievers. His strikeout percentage (19.1 percent) and walk percentage (10.1 percent) were both worse than league average of 20.4 percent and 7.7 percent, respectively. Ogando also had an abnormally high home-run-to-fly-ball ratio of 16.9 percent, well above his career average of 9.2 percent. However, considering his career xFIP is 4.17, a significant improvement with the Braves should not be expected.
