Padres get catcher Christian Bethancourt from Braves
The San Diego Padres acquired catcher Christian Bethancourt from the Atlanta Braves for pitcher Casey Kelly and catcher Ricardo Rodriguez.
Bethancourt was once viewed as the catcher of the future for the Braves, but his hitting woes overwhelmed his elite glove work and, now, led to his exit from Atlanta. Kelly, like Bethancourt, was once a top prospect in his respective system. Bethancourt joins a crowded catcher group in San Diego. A trade of Austin Hedges -- also a young, glove-first backstop -- may follow.
In 160 major-league plate appearances last year, Bethancourt slashed just .200/.225/.290, despite a fielding rating of three Defensive Runs Saved.
