Cardinals sign Jonathan Broxton to two-year contract

Free agent reliever Jonathan Broxton has re-upped with the St. Louis Cardinals on a two-year deal, per Tom Ackerman of KMOX.

What It Means:

The Cardinals acquired Broxton from the Brewers this season but chose to decline a $9 million club option on him at the end of the 2015 season. Despite the declined option, the Cardinals are bringing the 31 year-old back for 2 more seasons at $7.5 million total.

Broxton posted an ugly 4.62 ERA this season, but his 3.24 xFIP suggest he was unlucky. His 24.5 strikeout percentage was above league average (20.4 percent), despite being below his career average of 27.4 percent. His ERA significantly improved after joining the Cardinals, as he posted a 2.66 ERA in 23 2/3 innings.
