The Oakland Athletics are close to signing reliever John Axford, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
After trading for pitchers Liam Hendriks and Marc Rzepczynski and signing Ryan Madson to a three-year, $22 million deal, Oakland continues to revamp its bullpen. Axford was recently designated for assignment by the Colorado Rockies.
Over 55 2/3 innings this past season, Axford posted a 4.20 ERA, 3.57 FIP, 10.02 strikeouts-per-nine rate and 5.17 walks-per-nine. He ended the season with 25 saves.
