Cardinals expected to sign Matt Wieters to minor-league deal
The St. Louis Cardinals have signed free-agent catcher Matt Wieters to a minor league deal, with an official announcement to come on Wednesday.
The Washington Nationals offseason trade for Yan Gomes made Wieters expendable this winter. He has finally found a home, but with Yadier Molina firmly entrenched as the starting backstop, Wieters may spend the bulk his time in minors or see limited starts behind Molina on the depth chart.
Wieters batted .238 with a .704 OPS with 8 homers in 271 plate appearances in 2018.
