Red Sox remain out of running for Joakim Soria

Free agent reliever Joakim Soria is no longer in the running to be signed by the Boston Red Sox, according to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald.

What It Means:

The Red Sox acquired closer Craig Kimbrel in November and after that move, Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reported the lack of interest the Red Sox have had in signing Soria. Despite the reported desire to continue to improve the bullpen, it appears as though nothing has changed since Cotillo's report. Soria is believed to be asking for a contract in the range of three years for $27 million. He has reportedly drawn interest from the Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals.

Soria posted a 2.53 ERA in 67 2/3 innings pitched last season with the Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates, although his xFIP was more than a run higher at 3.57. Also concerning is that his strikeouts per nine innings of 8.51 was a career low, and significantly lower than his career average of 9.60. He also posted a career high in home runs allowed per nine innings at 1.06. Despite the warning signs, he's likely to receive the deal he desires since the free agent reliever market is so barren.
