Angels' Shohei Ohtani (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery next week
Los Angeles Angels pitcher/designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery next week.
Ohtani has dealt with a partially torn UCL ligament in his elbow for the past month-plus and has gone back and forth if surgery was necessary. Now that it is confirmed he will undergo surgery, the rookie phenom will not pitch at all in 2019 but is expected to be able to bat as a DH after at least six months of recovery.
Ohtani posted a 3.31 ERA while striking out 63 batters in 51 2/3 innings pitched. He clubbed 21 homers with 9 steals and a .280 batting average in 347 plate appearances as well.
