3 Daily Fantasy Baseball Hitters to Avoid on 9/21/16

Giancarlo Stanton has crushed homers in each of the past two games, but he has a tough matchup tonight against Max Scherzer.

As is the case in most daily fantasy sports, finding information on players you might want to roster is a lot easier than finding players to avoid.

While you can get away with a zero from a hitter in daily fantasy, you certainly don't want to target guys whose matchups aren't enticing.

Here are three hitters you may want to lessen your exposure to or even fade altogether on Wednesday.

Giancarlo Stanton, OF, Miami Marlins

FanDuel Price: $3,900

Giancarlo Stanton hasn’t been back in the Miami Marlins’ lineup long, but he has made his presence known over the last few games, homering in two straight contests. However, tonight Stanton faces off against Max Scherzer.

Right-handed hitters have just a .199 wOBA and 37.8% strikeout rate against Scherzer this season, while Scherzer's xFIP against fellow righties is 2.54.

Stanton has a .342 wOBA and 31% strikeout rate against righties this season. He isn’t a complete fade because of how contrarian he will likely be -- plus, he can dong off anyone -- but Stanton is not a good cash-game option tonight.

Odubel Herrera, OF, Philadelphia Phillies

FanDuel Price: $3,600

Odubel Herrera has been smoking the baseball over the last few games. He is 12-for-22 in his last five games with 2 homers, 6 RBI’s and 8 runs scored -- scoring an average of more than 25 FanDuel points per game in those five contests. In his most recent game, he added two swipes, as well, but all that goes out the window tonight against Chris Sale.

Herrera could see decent ownership because of his recent hot streak, but he has just a .281 wOBA with 23.3% strikeout rate against southpaws in 2016. He has yet to homer off a lefty this year.

Sale has limited lefties to a .246 wOBA and with 31.5% strikeout rate this season. There may be a Philadelphia Phillies' right-handed hitter or two worth checking out in tourneys, but it's best to avoid lefties against Sale.

Whit Merrifield, 2B, Kansas City Royals

FanDuel Price: $2,900

Whit Merrifield ended up as a landmine last night against Josh Tomlin, and things aren’t going to get any easier against Corey Kluber.

Kluber has been dominant against righties. Versus Kluber, right-handed hitters have just a .261 wOBA this year with a 29.3% strikeout rate and 26.9% hard-hit rate.

Merrifield only has 211 plate appearances against righties in the majors, but he has only mustered a .283 wOBA against them. That represents a drop of nearly 100 points when compared to his splits against lefties, and it makes him tough to roster tonight against Kluber.
