With Clayton Kershaw still having thrown only 74 pitches in his last outing, the risk that comes with his limited workload leaves enough room for concern that it's hard to lean on him as today's top arm.

Gerrit Cole comes with a lot less room for worry.

Cole ranks first among starters in action today with a 2.88 skill-interactive ERA (SIERA) as well as his 34.7% strikeout rate. Those marks rank first by a big margin, too, with the next-best being a 3.25 SIERA and 25.7% strikeout rate.

That production means that even in a tough matchup against the Oakland Athletics, the Houston Astros are the day's second-biggest favorites (-220 moneyline), and the A's have the third-lowest implied total (3.27).
