Del Mar Horse Racing Picks for Sunday 8/1/21

Starting at 5:00 p.m. EST, we have 10 races at Del Mar. Using numberFire’s projections as a guide, here are some of the best bets to make at FanDuel Racing.

As always, check for scratches and changes and monitor the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions.)

Pinehurst, Race 3

FanDuel Racing Odds: 5/2

Race 3 is a Maiden Special Weight for two-year-olds sprinting 5 furlongs. numberFire's algorithm projects Pinehurst (5/2) to come through from the rail for EPO trainer Bob Baffert. Enbarr (3/1), also trained by Baffert, and Penetrator (4/1) -- with leading jockey Flavien Prat aboard -- can challenge and hit the board.

Pinehurst is a son of Grade 1 winner Twirling Candy and a $385K purchase while Enbarr was a $200K purchase. Both are training very well for their debut in a good field of baby two-year-old runners.

Philipie Fast and K P Silver Bullet, Race 7

FanDuel Racing Odds: 20/1 and 4/1

Race 7 has a full field of 12 weaker runners, and Kattath (7/2) breaks from the outside post looking to secure early position in the 6 1/2-furlong sprint for Maiden Claimers. The numberFire data projects Kattah to hit the board behind longshot Philipie Fast (20/1) and K P Silver Bullet (4/1).

Philipie Fast makes his career debut at age three with little on the training tab.

K P Silver Bullet has flashed talent in his two spring starts and was claimed by trainer Bill Spawr for $50K in May. He makes his first start since being gelded.

Kattath finished a distant third in his three-year-old career debut in May at long odds and has a bullet work this month.

Shedaresthedeveil and As Time Goes By, Race 9

FanDuel Racing Odds: 7/5 and 8/5

Race 9 is the $300k Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes. The race drew seven fillies and mares, and it's going 1 1/16 miles. numberFire projects the three favorites to decide the race in order -- Shedaresthedevil (7/5), As Time Goes By (8/5) and Venetian Harbor (2/1).

Guaranteed Tip Sheet notes that Shedaresthedevil has five wins plus a second and two third-place finishes at the distance, and she makes her fifth Grade 1 start over the past year. She’s beaten the county’s leading older female Letruska, and EPO trainer Brad Cox is looking to get her the automatic invite to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, which the winner of this race receives.

As Time Goes By has it the board in all seven starts for fellow lab trainer Bob Baffert, according to Horse Racing Radar. Venetian Harbor is training superbly with four bullet works off her Grade 2 win in June.

Warren’s Showtime (8/1) has finished in the money in 12 straight starts and has a second and third racing at Del Mar.
