Belmont Park Horse Racing Picks For Sunday 5/16/21

It's a great time to dive into horse racing, and FanDuel Racing gives you the chance to do just that.

Starting at 3:05 p.m. EST, we have nine races at Belmont Park. Using numberFire’s projections as a guide, here are some of the best bets.

As always, check for scratches and changes, and monitor the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions.)

Welshman, Race 5

FanDuel Racing Odds: 15/1

Race 5 is a Maiden Claiming race with nine runnings going 1 1/16 miles on the inner turf. The top pick, according to numberFire’s data, is Bail Out (6/1) with favorite Digital Software (1/1) to finish runner-up. Digital Software returns to the track off a long layoff for trainer Chad Brown, and he’s failed a few times before as the race favorite.

It's not a good group of runners considering Bail Out is 0-for-20 but did beat first-time starter Welshman (15/1) last month. Welshman adds blinkers, could carry speed further on this stretch out and is worth a shot at a bigger price.

Translate and Jasminesque, Race 6

FanDuel Racing Odds: 7/5 and 15/1

Race 6 is an Allowance race for fillies and mares sprinting six furlongs on the turf. numberFire's projections call for three runners to hit the board who will only run if this race is taken off the turf. So don’t count on top choice Easy to Bless (2/1) to make it to post. The deserving favorite is Translate (7/5), who has top jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. riding. She’s run well in all six starts and returns to New York after breaking through in California as a favorite against some better runners.

Jasminesque (15/1) offers value at this price despite many failed races and just one win. She’s raced on both dirt and turf, which makes here results appear worse. Yet she prefers the grass and came from off the pace to nail Translate at the wire previously. While she has not done anything since and will need pace up front to run into, Jasminesque could surprise.

Shiraz, Race 8

FanDuel Racing Odds: 9/2

Race 8 is an Allowance race for state-bred runners sprinting 6 furlongs on the turf. numberFire projects favorite Big Package (9/5) to win in his second start off a layoff. Include him in trifecta wagering.

Shiraz (9/2) can race up front and has figured out how to win in recent races. We can toss out his last race against stronger open company, and he fits fine with jockey Luis Saez riding for EPO trainer Mike Maker.
