HORSE RACING

Gulfstream Park Horse Racing Picks for Sunday 2/28/21

It's a great time to dive into horse racing, and FanDuel Racing gives you the chance to do just that.

Starting at 12:10 p.m. ET, we have 12 races at Gulfstream Park. Using numberFire’s projections as a guide, here are some of the best bets.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and check the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions.)

Staten Island and Agent Creed, Race 6

FanDuel Racing Odds: 20/1 and 20/1

Race 6 is a Maiden Special Weight for three-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles on the turf. The top pick according to numberFire’s data is Southern District (9/2) with Spotters Hill (8/1) expected to hit the board. Southern District makes his debut for EPO trainer Chad Brown.

Favorite Avenue (2/1) is a $450K son of Quality Road. He makes his second start after finishing runner-up in his debut a month ago with a solid 92 speed figure.

Longshots of interest include Staten Island (20/1) with a poor morning line attached. He’s a son of Carpe Diem, a Grade 1 winner and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up. Top Race Reports points out that his Dam finished in the money 11-of-12 starts. Agent Creed (20/1), by favorite sire Jimmy Creed, is working well and can also outrun these odds at first asking. Spotters Hill (8/1) debuts for trainer Bill Mott, who Top Race Reports notes has been very productive with his debut runners.

It’s a Risk, Race 7

FanDuel Racing Odds: 4/1

Race 7 is a small Claiming race for older horses at 7 furlongs. numberFire’s algorithm projects Cool Hand Coop (7/2) to win. He drops to a lower level after a stalking third-place finish last out. It’s a Risk (4/1) will take money with leading jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. riding. He’s a son of Grade I winner Bellamy Road and won here in December. His last race three weeks ago was a third-place finish when going three wide at a shorter distance while tracking very fast early fractions.

Grey Streak and Potus, Race 8

FanDuel Racing Odds: 30/1 and 12/1

Race 8 is a Maiden Special Weight for three-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles on the turf. Another bomb to include with Top Race Reports and ECHR noting Grey Streak (30/1) was scratched twice in recent weeks and now makes his debut with solid morning works in place, including a bullet this month. The top pick of numberFire is Potus (12/1), who debuts for trainer Shug McGaughey and also has nice drills in place on his work tab. Megayacht (5/1) gets firsttime Lasix with top jockey John Velazquez riding for respected trainer Christophe Clement.
