HORSE RACING

Gulfstream Park Horse Racing Picks for Wednesday 2/24/21

It's a great time to dive into horse racing, and FanDuel Racing gives you the chance to do just that.

Starting at 1:10 p.m. EST, we have 10 races at Gulfstream Park. Using numberFire’s projections as a guide, here are some of the best bets.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and check the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions).

Perspective and Work Ethic, Race 4

FanDuel Racing Odds: 2/1 and 8/1

Race 4 is a Maiden Claiming race for three-year-olds sprinting 6 furlongs. There are many short prices, but Perspective (2/1) looks ready to break through in his 2021 debut. He's the projected runner-up, according to numberFire's data, behind first time runner Awesome Pudding (4/1). Perspective is working well for trainer Danny Gargan after being claimed last race when running up front before finishing fifth as the favorite.

American Ruler (12/1) is a son of Triple Crown winner American Pharaoh, but he’s 0-for-3. Royal War (7/2) with top jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. and his meet-best 29.7% win rate have a chance in his debut for trainer Kathleen O’Connell. Work Ethic (8/1) will improve in his second start with a jockey change to Paco Lopez. .

Alado and Dassult Mirage, Race 6

FanDuel Racing Odds: 5/2 and 5/1

Race 6 is a Maiden Claiming sprint at 5 furlongs on the Turf for three-year-olds. Mach One (2/1) and Alado (5/2) will take money as the two favorites, but numberFire’s algorithm rates Cowboy at Heart (6/1) and Dassult Mirage (5/1) as the ones to decide the winner. Mach One was DQ’s in his debut last month for drifting out and impeding another runner in the stretch. That allowed Dassult Mirage to place fourth. Alado was second-best in two races last month and continues to improve his speed at this track. Alado is a best bet of Guaranteed Tip Sheet and has proven he can compete at this level and was even better last race at 2/1 odds.

Noble Indy and High Noon Rider, Race 10

FanDuel Racing Odds: 3/1 and 6/1

Race 8 is a Claiming race for older horses going 1 1/16 miles on the Turf. Two horses entered for the main track only, including the favorite Walkoff (9/5). But he likely won’t make it to post, and numberFire data projects Noble Indy (3/1) with leading jockey Luis Saez riding for EPO Todd Pletcher to hit the board as a win-contender behind Tizzarunner (4/1). Saez was making a run turning for home but got stuck in traffic and Noble Indy was steadied in the stretch before running on to finish second as the co-favorite last month. His 101-speed-figure and better trip get him to the winners circle dropping down in class. Tizzarunner closed out 2020 with a win against higher-rated runners.

Guaranteed Tip Sheet likes High Noon Rider (6/1) as one to watch coming from way off the pace for EPO trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. He’s an eight-year-old still posting triple-digit speed figures. High Noon Rider has finished in the money in six-of-seven starts with two wins since last summer. Counter Offer (8/1) could not hit the board in three races here last summer, but comes in from Turfway as another deep closer that could surprise and make for a stronger exacta or trifecta payoff.
