HORSE RACING

Gulfstream Park Horse Racing Picks for Thursday 2/4/21

It's a great time to dive into horse racing, and FanDuel Racing gives you the chance to do just that.

Starting at 11:45 p.m. EST, we have 10 races at Gulfstream Park. Using numberFire’s projections as a guide, here are some of the best bets.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and check the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions.)

Shop Girl, Race 6

FanDuel Racing Odds: 5/2

There are short prices again today, but we hit on two winners Wednesday at Gulfstream. Race 6 is an Allowance race for three-year-old fillies sprinting 6 furlongs on the turf. Favorite Shop Girl (5/2) is the projected winner, according to numberFire’s data. Leading jockey Luis Saez rides for top trainer Christophe Clement. She was sired by Constitution and ran well up front when finishing second in a stakes race a month ago. This is her third start, and it is a slight cut back in distance. She will likely be running along the lead.

Flight to Shanghai (3/1) has Jose Ortiz riding and makes her first start since winning last July. Same for brother Irad Ortiz, Jr., who is riding Pens Street (7/2) at the rail. Pens Street is also off since winning her lone start here in September, when she came from off the pace at longer odds.

Horse Racing Radar notes that Shop Girl has the fastest speed rating (83) of the three horses we've touched on and has a stronger recent race in place along with some solid follow up on her work tab. The top speed in the race, per Daily Horse Picks, belongs to Reinforced (4/1) and Shop Girl, with the pace projector favoring Shop Girl.

Mo Maverick, Race 8

FanDuel Racing Odds: 5/2

Race 8 is a higher Claiming race for older horses going 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf. The numberFire algorithm projects favorite Renaisance Frolic (2/1) to win with Identifier (8/1) and Cove Blue (9/2) to finish in-the-money. Renaisance is a class horse and is working consistent and well in the mornings since failing to finish his last race in December. He’s not won in his last seven starts.

Two other horses to watch are both from EPO trainer Mike Maker. Unmoored (7/2) will be ridden by jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr., who boasts the meet's highest win percentage. Unmoored has a pair of triple-digit speed figures and a win over his last four starts, but he finished way back in two recent stakes races.

Mo Maverick (3/1) -- with Jose Ortiz riding -- is preferred. He has 8 wins in 24 starts, including a victory in November and a close third-place finish here a month ago when he showed late speed in a shorter sprint while posting a 106 speed figure.

Winter Princess and Time Sensitive, Race 10

FanDuel Racing Odds: 15/1 and 9/2

Race 10 is a Maiden Claiming race for three-year-old fillies, and it's going 1 mile on the turf. We have a competitive field of 12 runners with no clear favorite. numberFire's algorithm projects Take Me As I Am (7/2) on top of Katiesdreamgirl (4/1), who stretches out and runs with Lasix after rallying to finish second last start.

But Horse Racing Radar notes that Winter Princess (15/1) has the best closing pace figure in the field and is a live longshot to hit the board and cash in. Time Sensitive (9/2) ran well and finished second last race, coming in a half-length in front of pacesetter She’sanearthmover (8/1).
