Pimlico and Preakness Stakes Horse Racing Picks for Saturday 10/3/20
It's a great time to dive into horse racing, and FanDuel Racing gives you the chance to do just that.
Starting at noon EST, we have 10 races at Pimlico. Using numberFire’s projections as a guide, here are some of the best bets.
As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and check the weather and track conditions.
(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions.)
Caravel and Chart, Race 4
FanDuel Racing Odds: 12/1 and 5/1
Race 4 is the $100K Hilltop Stakes for 3-year-old fillies. It should be very competitive race with 11 runners after two were scratched. The top pick at Daily Horse Picks is Shimmering (10/1) with Caravel (12/1) and Vigilantes Way (9/2) projected to hit the board and finish in-the-money.
Shimmering makes her U.S. debut but is 0-for-3 this year against stronger runners. Caravel has value as the top pick of Guaranteed Tip Sheet. She is 3-for-3 and has improved her speed figure each race with a minor stakes win last out the end of August. Vigilantes Way is 2-for-2 this year with both wins against Allowance company. She’s a frontrunner but failed to hit the board in her only stakes try last year.
Chart (5/1) has won 3-of-6 starts this year and is in peak form, winning her last two at Woodbine, including a Grade 3 race when pressing the pace.
Admiral Lynch, Race 7
FanDuel Racing Odds: 7/2
Race 7 is the Grace 3 Frank De Francis Memorial Dash at 6 furlongs. Stan the Man (9/2) has been scratched, leaving numberFire’s projected winner as Admiral Lynch (7/2), who is breaking from the rail for EPO trainer Mike Maker.
Admiral Lynch won a Grade 3 race earlier this year and enters this race off an Allowance win in an outing in which he posted a 111 speed figure. In his lone race at Pimlico last year, he finished third in a Grade 3 race, but he has improved since then with six straight races of triple-digit speed figures.
Guaranteed Tip Sheet also picks Admiral Lynch to win and notes that Krysto Skye (5/1) has hit the board in eight of his last nine races while Laki (6/1) has three straight runner-up finishes, a span which followed a win.
Art Collector and Pneumatic, Race 11
FanDuel Racing Odds: 5/2 and 20/1
Race 11 is the 145th running of the $1 million Grade 1 Preakness Stakes. There are 11 runners going 1 3/16 miles, and Kentucky Derby winner Authentic (9/5) will be a popular bet as the favorite and top pick of numberFire. The other projected board hitters via numberFire’s algorithm are Swiss Skydiver (6/1) and Art Collector (5/2). Both Authentic and Thousand Words (6/1) are trained by Bob Baffert, who shoots for his record eighth Preakness Stakes win.
Authentic won the Kentucky Derby wire-to-wire at 8/1 odds and should have plenty of pressure running up front from filly Swiss Skydiver with Art Collector stalking the leaders. Art Collector has won four straight races this year, including some impressive and decisive wins. Art Collector won the Blue Grass Stakes by 3 1/2 lengths over Swiss Skydiver and was 10 lengths clear of Mr. Big News (12/1), who is entered in the Preakness. Art Collector has been off for nearly 60 days since missing the Kentucky Derby with a minor foot injury. He should be fresh and ready to run and is the top pick of Guaranteed Tip Sheet.
Looking for a longshot with value odds attached? Try an improving Pneumatic (20/1), who finished fourth in the Belmont Stakes with a wide trip and came back to win a minor stakes in August with a 113 speed figure. That’s in line with the top runners in this race, and trainer Steve Asmussen has this horse improving.
