Saratoga Horse Racing Picks for Thursday 8/20/20

Saratoga has eight races on Thursday. Which horses should you bet on at FanDuel Racing?

It's a great time to dive into horse racing, and FanDuel Racing gives you the chance to do just that.

Starting at 1:21 p.m. EST, we have eight Thoroughbred races at Saratoga. Using our numberFire projections as a guide, here are some of the best bets.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes, and check the weather and track conditions.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions).

Simply Sweet, Race 2

FanDuel Racing Odds: 8/5

Race 2 is a Maiden Special Weight for fillies and mares running a route at 1 1/8 miles. The two favorites Simply Sweet (8/5) and Thankful (9/5) both scratched out of a race here in early August looking for a better spot. We had a 2-for-3 day yesterday but, unfortunately, the chalk is in play more today.

Simply Sweet is sired by Super Saver and working sharply in the mornings since that scratch. She finished fourth on debut in June, given the race running to the back but finished up well. She's running here with more ground, and some sharp works tells us top trainer Bill Mott has her well-meant for this race.

Thankful is sired by Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. She’s 0-for-2 with improved speed in a runner-up finish in June. A bullet work best-of-21 half mile says she’s also ready to improve for EPO trainer Todd Pletcher with Luis Saez maintaining the mount.

Page Querido (6/1) is a price underneath who will run better at this distance and has leading rider Jose Ortiz up and racing along the lead.

Out of Trouble, Race 3

FanDuel Racing Odds: 5/2

Race 3 is a state-bred claimer for fillies and mares going 1-mile on the Inner Turf. The favorites Awesome Alana (8/5) and First Appeal (9/5) have implied odds to win of 38% and 36%, respectively, at FanDuel Racing.

Awesome Alana is 3-for-7, winning her lone race this year in March with a slower speed figure (73). She was claimed by trainer Linda Rice, and did run better last fall, and those 80’s speed figures are best of any of today’s rivals current form.

First Appeal is better sprinting but does get class relief and perhaps a boost from EPO trainer Rudy Rodriguez.

Leading jockey Irad Ortiz rides Out of Trouble (5/2) for EPO trainer Brad Cox. A pair of poor recent performances don’t show much while trailing the field, but potential to run closer and reach the 80’s speed figures from earlier this year or even higher when running last fall against better. Anticipate improvement.

Stan the Man and Binkster, Race 7

FanDuel Racing Odds: 7/5 and 9/2

Race 7 is the minor $85K Tale of the Cat Stakes for older horses sprinting 6 furlongs. The favorite Stan the Man (7/5) will get plenty of support having finished runner-up in a Grade 2 race last out.

T Loves a Fight (3/1) and My Boy Tate (2/1) both hit the board in a minor stakes here the end of July with triple-digit speed figures.

Ready to Escape (10/1) moves up in class but will be up front in a TimeForm pace-projector favoring forward runners and speed.

Binkster (9/2) pressed the pace with a runner-up finish and did finish third behind the My Boy Tate and T Loves a Fight in November at longer odds. Must improve to finish better.
