Del Mar Horse Racing Picks for Saturday 8/8/20

It's a great time to dive into horse racing, and FanDuel Racing gives you the chance to do just that.

Starting at 5:00 p.m. EST, we have 11 races at Del Mar Racetrack. Using our numberFire projections as a guide, here are some of the best bets.

As always, check the program for scratches and changes.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions.)

Weston and Herd Immunity, Race 6

FanDuel Racing Odds: 5/1 and 7/2

We have a short but contentious field for the $150K Best Pal Stakes for 2-year-olds, and it's sprinting 6 furlongs. Favorites have won 17 of the last 25 editions of this Grade 2 for juveniles, but we’ll try to slow down that strong trend. Favorite Roderick (9/5) ships in off a fast-paced maiden debut win and looks tough with leading rider Flavien Prat taking the call for the top pick of Guaranteed Tip Sheet and numberFire.

But there are plenty of solid rivals, including Herd Immunity (7/2) for the meets leading trainer, EPO trainer Peter Miller. Herd Immunity should get a boost having worked consistently over the track the past three weeks following her second start and third-place finish in the tough Bashford Manor (G3) at Churchill Downs in rainy weather. Having already raced 6 furlongs against solid company is an advantage. She should love beautiful Del Mar and the fast track by the sea.

Weston (5/1) should not be overlooked from the smaller Ryan Hanson barn with top jock Drayden Van Dyke providing the spark down the lane. He won his short sprint debut at long odds in June with a 93 speed figure to match Roderick. He looked professional and galloped out past the finish full of energy. He’ll press the pace with Roderick and can outlast.

Ambivalent (5/1) was one of the favorites when finishing second to Weston in his debut. We're always looking for improvement from young runners, and this one has stamina and can offer a nice payoff underneath in Exacta and Trifecta wagering.

Cupid’s Claws and Camino de Estrella, Race 7

FanDuel Racing Odds: 4/1 and 8/1

Race 6 is a 1 3/8 mile marathon on the turf. There are nine runners for this Allowance Optional Claiming race, and the top pick of numberFire is favorite Tartini (5/2). Implied odds at FanDuel Racing give her a 29% chance to win in this race. Tartini makes his first start in two months after racing past lesser claimers to win at Santa Anita for his third win in 24 starts. Leading rider Umberto Rispoli keeps the mount.

Cupid’s Claws (4/1) missed last time out with a wide trip but has hit triple-digit speed figures twice this year and also won from off the pace at Golden Gate in June. He was claimed by new trainer Robert Hess following the two-length defeat last race and has the pedigree to contend against these.

Camino de Estrella (8/1) breaks from the rail, and he’s hit the board in nine straight starts, including six this year. He has shown consistency in speed figures, including a 99 clip when winning a 1 1/8 mile race at Santa Anita two months ago. He's being offered at the $40K claim price.

German bred Tintoretto (3/1) picks up leading rider Flavien Prat after finishing an okay fourth in a Grade 3 race in his 2020 debut in March.

Beau Recall and Harmless, Race 9

FanDuel Racing Odds: 3/1 and 15/1

Race 9 is the $150K Yellow Ribbon Handicap (G2) for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles. The race likely would have played to form with favorites Jolie Olimpica (5/2) and off-the-pace runner Beau Recall (3/1) deciding this in the stretch. But Jolie Olimpica scratched this morning. The top pick at numberFire is Beau Recall followed by Keeper Ofthe Stars (7/2),

Beau Recall won this race last year, and the 7-year-old is still performing at a high level. Horse Racing Nation's Super Screener says she’ll be coming from off the pace along with deep closer Lady Prancealot (5/1), who is a reliable board hitter. Keeper Ofthe Stars (7/2) will also come from off the pace if she fires. A poor performance last race was not like her past graded stakes wins.

With pace-presser Jolie Olimpica scratched, long shots Harmless (15/1) and Summering (12/1) should set the early fractions and pace. Harmless is the most capable of holding up for a piece of the board, having finished third a month ago in the Ellis Park Turf Stakes at long odds. Harmless is showing a strong pair of morning works at Del Mar since. We can’t underestimate the potential power of EPO from trainer Phil D’Amato at a distance.
