Mountaineer Horse Racing Picks for Monday 7/20/20
With most of the sports world on pause, it's a great time to dive into horse racing, and FanDuel Racing gives you the chance to do just that.
Starting at 7 p.m. EST today, we have nine races at Mountaineer. Using our projections as a guide, here's a look at some of the best bets.
As always, keep an eye out for scratches and changes.
(I will be referencing Equibase's Speed Figure, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions)
Plug and Play, Race 1 (7:00 PM)
FD Racing Odds: 6/1
In this Maiden Special Weight, our model has Plug and Play placing third, however, I like the gelding's chances on these figures. The four-year-old will be making his 2020 debut after finishing 2019 with consecutive speed figures of 75. He's had figures of 70-plus in five of eight career efforts. His recent outings at Mountaineer have shown a horse worth betting on. Jockey Alex Gonzalez is third in purse here this year.
Our Golden Boy (7/2) is fresh off a runner-up finish with a figure of 71 six weeks ago. numberFire likes him to place second in this one as well. Right the Wrong (2/1) is both the current betting favorite and our model's winning pick. The gelding's last two efforts have been poor, but he did have a showing of 81 here eight months ago. Suddenly Seductive (6/1) is worthy of consideration in his debut.
R Paper Chaser, Race 2 (7:22 PM)
FD Racing Odds: 7/2
R Paper Chaser last raced here five days ago, posting an impressive figure of 81 in a fourth-place finish. The mare has achieved figures of 66-plus in four of five career efforts at Mountaineer. The short turnaround is concerning, but the figures make her worth a bet.
Dave's Texas Lady (3/1) is the current betting favorite and will benefit from the jockey booking of Keivan Serrano. Serrano is first in purse here in 2020. Our model's pick is Dirt Road Princess (5/1). The mare is a three-time winner here, though her recent form has been questionable. Dewyalovemenow (4/1) has had some impressive showings here and should be in the mix.
Event Driven, Race 8 (9:34 PM)
FD Racing Odds: 4/1
In this Allowance event, I like Event Driven to come out on top. The five-year-old has reached figures above 90 in seven of his last nine, including a superb 104 figure a year ago. His first race of 2020 was underwhelming, but that was among superior competition. He'll be jockeyed by Odhair Mayta, who has won 18% of his races here this year.
Peanuts Perfection (7/5) is the betting favorite, coming off a win at Thistledown a month ago. The gelding reached a figure of 81 in that effort. He'll be ridden by the aforementioned Serrano. Pettinberg (5/2) had placed top-three in each of his first seven career outings before a poor effort at Penn National 19 days ago. He should be thereabouts. No Choice (12/1) is a longshot who could be in the mix.
