Indiana Grand Horse Racing Picks for Thursday 7/9/20
With most of the sports world on pause, it's a great time to dive into horse racing, and TVG gives you the chance to do just that.
Starting at 2:20 p.m. EST, we have 10 races at Indiana Grand. Let's look at some of the best bets.
As always, keep an eye out for scratches and changes.
Chargaree, Race 1
TVG Odds: 2/1
Chargaree (2/1) is the favorite in today's opener, and the mare looks to be in her own class in this field.
She has come in fourth in each of her last two races, but before that, Chargaree had won five of her past six events. She posted a career-best 81 speed figure four races ago, per Equibase, and she's had a speed figure of at least 75 in two of her three outings since. For reference, Long Legged Linda (5/2), the second favorite, has a career-best 78 speed figure and hasn't been above a 62 speed figure in two 2020 races.
While betting on the favorite is never super sexy, there's still some slight value here with Chargaree at 2/1 odds. A 2/1 line implies win odds of 33.3%, while DailyHorsePicks.com gives her a 36% chance to win along with a whopping 87% chance to be in the top three.
Clear To Close, Race 4
TVG Odds: 7/2
Clear to Close (7/2) is currently the second-favorite in Race 4 behind Special Reserve (5/2), but there are a few reasons to feel good about Clear To Close getting the win. Clear To Close has been in the top three in three of his four career races, and DHP gives the colt the top pace and speed ratings in the field -- by a wide margin, too.
Clear To Close also has a minor advantage at jockey in the form of Emmanuel Esquivel, who owns a 13% win rate here in 2020. Special Reserve will have Declan Carroll at the controls, and Carroll has won just 7% of his 2020 outings at Indiana Grand.
Beach Benny and Shakeitonthebeach, Race 10
TVG Odds: 2/1 and 5/2
DHP hands Beach Benny (2/1) and Shakeitonthebeach (5/2) the best win odds in the field, with Beach Benny (29%) a slight favorite over Shakeitonthebeach (26%).
Beach Benny has the edge in recent form as the gelding has gone 2-1-2-2-1 over his past five outings, registering speed figures between 73 and 78 in each of those five races. He's got the best pace rating in the field, per DHP.
Shakeitonthebeach has three wins in seven career races, and his speed figures have been 75 and 71 since a down 66 clip three races ago. This will be the filly's first race of 2020.
All in all, Beach Benny deserves to be the favorite, and I expect Shakeitonthebeach to come in second.
