Santa Anita Park Horse Racing Picks for Saturday 6/20/20

There are 12 races at Santa Anita Park Saturday including two graded stakes races. Which horses are you betting at TVG?

With most of the sports world on pause, it's a great time to dive into horse racing, and TVG gives you the chance to do just that.

Starting at 3:30 p.m. EST, we have 12 races at Santa Anita Park. Using our numberFire projections as a guide, here are some of the best bets.

As always, keep an eye out for scratches and changes on the daily program.

(I will reference Equibase's Speed Figure in selected races, which tells you how fast a horse has been running in each of its races -- adjusted for track, distances, and conditions.)

Toinette, Race 2

FD Odds: 8/5

It's closing weekend at The Great Race Place, and Race 2 is the Grade 3 Wilshire for fillies and mares going one-mile on the turf. The two nearly even favorites are Toinette (8/5) and Keeper Ofthe Stars (9/5), and they are the top two picks at numberFire.

Toinette is by Scat Daddy, and she has the highest and most consistent triple-digit speed figures in this race. Making her 2020 debut with a consistent work tab in place, Toinette is four for four on the Santa Anita turf and is a versatile runner with tactical speed in a race light on pace.

Keeper Ofthe Stars is the only Grade 1 winner in the field, having captured the Gamely Stakes last month, and she is going longer over this turf track. She’s won four of her last five starts on ‘firm’ grass and has the recency edge over Toinette.

Brickyard Ride, Race 8

FD Odds: 5/2

Race 8 is the start of the Late Pick 5 with Cal-breds sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf. A snapshot at TVG shows Brickyard Ride (5/2) with a career-best 104 speed figure in winning last month in a similar Allowance race. He blistered through the opening quarter mile, opening up by six lengths and winning by nearly nine. That was on the dirt, and his 43.80-second opening half-mile time was the fastest for a six-furlong race the past five years at Santa Anita. He's now trying the turf, and we’ll ride along with the top pick at numberFire.

Jetovator (3/1) has just one win in 12 starts but does have three runner-up finishes, including last time out a month ago. His 97 speed figure in that one tied a career best as he came flying from way off the pace to miss by just a neck. A quality Pick 5 inclusion with Santa Anita’s leading rider Flavien Prat (26% win) at his best.

A Man’s Man (10/1) with Drayden Van Dyke in the saddle will be a popular pick playing the name game. He was running second into the stretch before fading in the last race that Jetovator came flying. A bullet workout in prep for this is eye catching. He is a potential score at a nice price and can be included to hit the board and in the Pick 5.

Collusion Illusion, Race 9

FD Odds: 4/5

Race 9 is the Grade 3 Lazaro Barrera for 3-year-olds, and it's going 6 1/ furlongs. Collusion Illusion (4/5) won’t be denied in this short field of five as the top choice at Daily Horse Picks. He’s 3-for-4, winning his 2020 debut off a long layoff with a career-best 106 speed figure.

This Twirling Candy colt ranked among the top two-year-olds in California last summer and should be another favorite to win this race, making it eight of the last ten years. Single Collusion Illusion in all horizontal bets with FanDuel Racing, giving Collusion Illusion a huge 56% implied chance to win.
