Ok....I wanted to try a different strategy to see what would happen in a mock draft, so i opted to wait on a rb. I had the 10th pick in a 10-team standard draft. Am I stupid to actually kinda like this draft strategy so far? Don't take that the wrong way...I am 110% on board with stacking your WR group. I won two leagues last year, and in one of them I started a WR at Flex 11 out of 16 weeks, and 13 out of 16 weeks in the other. In both, my "WR3" was a Top 10 WR by year's end.
But it's not as simple as "Get 3 WR1's = Championship"...you have to pay close attention to the balance of your RB corps. Initially, it essentially requires a "shotgun" approach...just cast a wide net and hope some of the guys you pulled in hit. Ideally they are young, talented, or in great situations. Of the group you drafted, I would say Joique Bell is a perfect example. He is not really a guy that carries tons of hype, esp. with casual fantasy players...but just like Zac Stacy last year, Doug Martin the year before, etc...there will be guys that appear from nowhere to become must-start RBs. Hopefully, when that happens, they are already on your roster. Plan on having the maximum number of RBs you can on your roster, and play the waiver wire relentlessly. Ultimately, there is only so much research and news one can consume, and when the rubber meets the road, you want to just be ready to plug guys you weren't expecting to be valuable in right away.
Avoid guys like Frank Gore...guys whose upside or points ceiling is pretty much already known. All you're ever doing with those guys is hoping they don't disappoint you week in and week out. Steven Jackson is another example. They may seem tempting, and they may seem like good assets because they are relatively proven commodities, but what you're really shooting for is having guys whose points ceilings are much higher than they are currently expected to reach. Like Christine Michael, for example...as of right now, he's a "backup" RB. Playing behind a perennial Top 5 RB. Doesn't seem like he's worth much a roster add when you lean on those two arguments...but when you watch him run, the talent is clearly there. His coaches love him. Analysts love him. When you consider some other facts about Marshawn Lynch, and the negative narratives he fits in to (Age, # of Career Touches, RB that played in the Super Bowl, etc)...Christine Michael is certainly a guy I'm going to try and get very cheap in the draft. If it doesn't work out, whatever...but if ANYTHING happens that puts him in a position to touch the ball 15+ times a game...I just won my league.
There are no "unknowns" in fantasy football anymore...just surprises. Last year, I read scouting reports on Zac Stacy. I heard his name, and put some thought in to who, if any, of the Rams RBs was going to be worth drafting. Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that none of them were really worth wasting a draft pick on. Two years ago, I actually thought Legarrette Blount was untouchable in Tampa as the starter, and laughed at my buddy for wasting a pick when he picked Doug Martin in the 8th round. Point I'm trying to make is...you're not going to run in to many situations where people in your league just straight up don't even know a player exists...but you can count on them underestimating guys that have the potential, but just need the opportunity. Find those guys. Stash them. And laugh when you end up with not only 3 Top 10 WRs, but 2 Top 20 RBs as well. In the meantime, have a guy on your roster that you can count on. There's actually been a lot of talk that I've heard so far this year that RB2 is quickly becoming one of the most unimportant positions in fantasy (outside of K/DST obviously)...unimportant in the sense that you're not automatically going to lose if you don't score a Top-20 guy to fill it.
I hope I'm making sense. Sorry to go on a super long rant...but I didn't want you to get discouraged w/ the stacked-WR strategy over one below-average mock. It is a strategy that can work (speaking from personal experience)...but to win (and this only becomes more important the more hardcore people you play with are), you're going to have to be constantly monitoring your RB corps until you end up with at least two guys not named Charles, McCoy, or Forte that can get you week-in and week-out solid numbers.
Vereen is a flex play at best in standard leagues and Gore is getting old with a lot of young RBs behind him so his floor is much more likely than his high end. Even at the high end he is a RB2 at best, so he is instead filling your RB1 role. Ridley is likely a better start each week over Vereen in standard, but even then he is a gamble to rely on as your RB2. It might pan out, but statistics say you took an unneeded risk. Bell will only be relevant when Bush is out.
While you have a lot of potential on the bench it's not likely that it will be enough to really fill your void at RB. Had a guy in one of my leagues last year do the heavy WR early in the draft thing that you did, had the same ridiculous looking WR depth....he ended up with 2 wins on the season.
Also a note on your QB choices. You obviously got Rivers late...Think about not even bother drafting Cam Newton and instead taking Rivers at whereever you took him at to be your STARTER. Last year Rivers only finished 6 points behind Newton in standard scoring
