Kansas City agrees in principle to trade Alex Smith to Washington

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed in principle to trade Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins, per Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star.

What It Means:

No word on the exact package the Chiefs will get in return, but it is now officially Pat Mahomes-time in Kansas City. With Smith now a Redskin, that signals the end of the Kirk Cousins tenure in the nation's capital as well. He is scheduled to become a free agent in March. The Chiefs will also save nearly $17M in salary with the trade of Smith, which will become official at the start of the new league year on March 14.

Smith enjoyed the best year of his career as he threw for a career-best 26 touchdowns, 4,054 yards, and only 5 interceptions. The quarterback posted 133.95 net expected points, the fifth-most of any quarterback in the NFL last season.
