2014 first-rounder Marcus Smith on roster bubble?
The Newark Star-Ledger's Eliot Shorr-Parks said Philadelphia Eagles outside linebacker Marcus Smith (hamstring) is on the roster bubble.
Head coach Chip Kelly has already distanced himself from the 2014 first-round pick, saying he had little to do with his selection in the Draft. While Kelly is understandably frustrated with Smith's injury, there's so little depth at outside linebacker for the Eagles that Smith is almost guaranteed a roster spot for 2015. He'll need to produce to secure that for 2016 and beyond.
The Eagles had a lackluster pass defense last year, ranking 20th in schedule-adjusted Defensive Passing Net Expected Points. Where Smith makes his hay is rushing the passer, so the Eagles are counting on him to make big steps forward this year. If he doesn't, he may be out of a job.
