Jonas Gray starts preseason game over Blount, is ineffective

Jonas Gray managed 11 yards on five carries in the New England Patriots' third preseason game.

What It Means:

Gray got the starting nod over LeGarrette Blount, but was unable to get anything going in this game. His 5-for-11 line actually hides the fact that he had one rush for nine yards, and was essentially stood up on the other four carries. Still, he is the clear favorite for Week 1 duties while Blount serves his suspension.

Gray was something special in the game against Indianapolis last year, rushing for 201 yards and four touchdowns. That is largely what composes his third-ranked per-play Rushing Net Expected Points score from the 2014 season. That said, he clearly has athletic ability, and should still be in the mix for carries in head coach Bill Belichick's notorious running back rotation.
